The Open University
The Open University (OU) was established in 1969 in the U.K. The philosophy behind the OU is to be 'open' in all senses of the word, giving maximum educational opportunity to adults of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. It was founded with the aim of bringing university-level teaching to people who might not be able to study at a regular university. To achieve this goal, the OU has pioneered a style of tuition called 'supported open learning', and was the first university in the world dedicated to this type of learning, often called 'distance learning'. Students do not attend classes on campus, but study from home in their own time. This means that many more people, for example workers in full-time employment, people with disabilities and those who care for family members, are able to take advantage of adult education. What's more, you don't need any previous qualifications in order to enroll on an OU course. You have to be 16 or over, but there is no upper age limit so adults can join at any age. The university is 'open' to all students, and those with disabilities are a priority. Around 10,000 students have disabilities.
Students study via a variety of media, from books, special television and radio programs, and DVDs to CD-ROM and web-based materials. Students are typically set project work and a number of assignments, and end with an examination. The learning is 'supported' which means that a tutor guides each student in his or her studies. Tutors are experienced in their subject, and in distance learning - many are former OU students. They help students individually by phone, email or letter. For some courses, students can choose to attend a tutorial to meet their tutor and other students in person. Sometimes, attendance on a residential or day school is required. Most courses last six or nine months, but the learning is flexible and you can adapt the timescale to suit your own situation. You can do just one course, or link several courses together to make a degree program.
Today, the OU leads the world in the design and delivery of distance teaching and learning. Among the top universities in the U.K., it has an excellent academic reputation. A qualification from the university, whether a degree, diploma or certificate, is recognized by academic institutions and professional organizations worldwide. What's more, over 50,000 employers sponsor members of their staff on OU courses, and one in five MBA students in the U.K. is studying with the OU. It is one of the world's largest universities, with around 150,000 undergraduate and 30,000 postgraduate students. Over 25,000 students live overseas, showing that OU courses are accessible all around the world.
